Binghamton University launches philanthropy incubator

The Binghamton University student-run Philanthropy Incubator Project is now accepting applications from local nonprofit organizations.

Organizations that wish to apply for grants of up to $10,000 must be located in the Southern Tier or Central New York region and serve low-income youths below age 18 and/or adults above age 65. The organization must have been an internship or field placement site for Binghamton University social work or public administration students in the past year.


NYSERDA awards funding for energy-storage projects

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today awarded funding to Cornell University and Binghamton University for energy-storage projects.
The funding is part of $8 million NYSERDA awarded for 19 projects around the state. The projects could have applications in transportation, smart grids, renewable energy, and other areas, according to NYSERDA.

CASE hosts information-systems confab to mark 25th anniversary

SYRACUSE — The Center for Advanced Systems and Engineering (CASE) at Syracuse University is planning a major two-day conference in April to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Ryan Dickerson, a junior at Syracuse University, is featured in Inc. magazine's 2010 Cool College Start-Up Contest.

According to Inc., Dickerson created an ergonomic pillow that transforms a bed into a couch. Dickerson hopes to start selling the product, known as the Rylaxer, at colleges nationwide next year.


OCC to offer new certificate program for utility workers

Onondaga Community College (OCC) and National Grid are teaming up on a new certificate program aimed at utility workers.

The state Education Department approved the new program in February. The one-year course provides hands-on training for line workers at a time when the industry is facing a shortage of qualified workers, according to National Grid.
