Federal, state dollars aid carbon storage research

A team of research institutions including Cornell University received $1.3 million to study the potential of storing gas emissions from power plants in underground rock formations.

The money comes from the U.S. Department of Energy. The initiative will also receive $250,000 in funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.


Keystone Material Testing merges with Enviro Testing

Keystone Material Testing, LLC (KMT) of Binghamton on Thursday announced its merger with Enviro Testing, also of Binghamton.
The joint press release did not include any financial details of the transaction.

KMT offers construction material testing services. The firm operates at the corporate offices of Keystone Associates Architects, Engineers, and Surveyors, LLC at 58 Exchange St. in Binghamton.


NYSEG to launch efficiency program for small companies

New York State Electric & Gas Corp. (NYSEG) is offering a new small business energy-efficiency program in most of its service area.

The utility is partnering with EnerPath of Rochester, a firm that specializes in energy-efficiency assessments.


Carbon dioxide plant opens in Volney

A new carbon dioxide production plant is now running at the Sunoco ethanol facility in Volney.

Linde North America's carbon dioxide plant can produce 600 tons of the gas per day. The gas is captured from ethanol-production emissions, purified, and liquefied for sale to customers throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New England.


New York Senate passes moratorium on hydrofracking

The New York State Senate has voted to suspend hydraulic fracturing for the extraction of natural gas or oil until May 15, 2011.

The legislation, which now heads to the Assembly, would halt the issuance of new permits for such drilling in the Marcellus Shale formation, which is found in much of the Southern Tier and stretches into Central New York.
