Chobani yogurt maker plans $100M expansion

Agro-Farma, Inc. will break ground today on an expansion of its Chobani yogurt operation in Chenango County.
Agro-Farma set up shop five years ago in a 70,000-square-foot former Kraft manufacturing plant in South Edmeston. At the time, company President and Founder Hamdi Ulukaya said he hoped to employ 15 to 20 people that first year and 75 people by the company's fourth year.
At age five, Agro-Farma currently employs 200 people and will add 100 more along with its project to boost production, says Nicki Briggs, director of communications.

Oneida Nation moves cigarette factory to avoid tax issue

As legal and political battles continue over whether New York will ever collect taxes from the sale of cigarettes on Indian land, the Oneida Indian Nation is taking steps to strengthen its own position.

The nation announced today it will move its Buffalo-based cigarette manufacturing plant to Oneida to take advantage of a federal law protecting products tribes manufacture on their own reservations from state tax laws.

New York manufacturing index rises two points in August

New York manufacturers say business conditions improved modestly this month. That’s according to the latest Empire State Manufacturing Survey report, which the Federal Reserve Bank of New York issued Aug. 16.
