	SU institute receives grant to help veterans find jobs by Eric Reinhardt
	The Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University has received nearly $500,000 to serve as a partner in the Veterans' Employment and Training Service National Technical Assistance Center. The U.S. Department of Labor on Wednesday announced the grant through its Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program.

	State gains jobs, unemployment flat by Traci DeLore
	The state may have seen its largest monthly job increase in July since 2005, but the uptick had little effect on unemployment. The state added 29,000 private-sector jobs in July, but the unemployment rate was unchanged from the previous month at 8.2 percent, according to a Labor Department news release. That's down from 8.7 percent in July 2009.

	Area projects receive state grants by Traci DeLore
	A number of Central New York projects will receive a financial boost from Empire State Development as its board of directors approved $9.3 million in new funding today. The city of Oswego received $1 million from the Restore New York Communities Initiative for its harbor revitalization project, which will cover a portion of the construction costs for a 36,000-square-foot expansion of the existing Best Western Captain's Quarters Hotel. The new facilities will include 18 additional hotel rooms and a new restaurant for a total cost of $5 million.

	Gillibrand wants tax credit extended by Eric Reinhardt
	U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) is pushing to make permanent a tax cut for businesses that hire veterans. The "Work Opportunity Tax Credit," which was part of the federal economic stimulus package, is meant to encourage companies to hire veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

	MedTech president to co-chair national alliance by Kevin Tampone
	MedTech President Heather Erickson is one of two new co-chairs of the State Medical Technology Alliance, a national network of associations representing medical-device companies. Erickson's co-chair is Joseph Panetta, president and CEO of BIOCOM in Southern California. Syracuse-based MedTech is a trade association representing medical device and technology firms in upstate New York.

	Celebrating Washington Station
	Spending on office buildings, which has dropped 47.5 percent since the September 2008 record-spending high, is nearing a 13-year low, according to the Institute for Trend Research. Permits for new-office construction have dropped 26.7 percent just since last December. Office vacancy rates in the second quarter of 2010 increased to 17.4 percent, the 10th consecutive quarterly rise. Construction of office buildings is projected to close 2010 at nearly 32 percent below 2009.
