New York closing costs tops in nation

A new study from Bankrate, Inc. found that New York's home-mortgage closing costs were the highest in the nation.

The company released its 2010 Closing Costs Survey on Monday. The survey found that New York led the nation with average origination and closing costs of more than $5,600. Arkansas was the least expensive area with average fees of more than $3,000.


DiNapoli audit says Medicaid overpaid for dental care

New York's Medicaid program paid more than $40 million for excessive dental cleanings and oral examinations over a five-year period ending Aug. 31, 2009.

The finding is part an audit New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released today.


Area projects receive state grants

A number of Central New York projects will receive a financial boost from Empire State Development as its board of directors approved $9.3 million in new funding today.
The city of Oswego received $1 million from the Restore New York Communities Initiative for its harbor revitalization project, which will cover a portion of the construction costs for a 36,000-square-foot expansion of the existing Best Western Captain's Quarters Hotel. The new facilities will include 18 additional hotel rooms and a new restaurant for a total cost of $5 million.

SEFCU acquires mortgage-banking firm

SEFCU, a credit union with several branches in the Syracuse and Binghamton areas, said today it plans to acquire a Latham-based mortgage banking company.

Home Funding Finders, which also has an office in Syracuse, will become a subsidiary of SEFCU when the transaction closes Sept. 1. Terms were not disclosed.


Retail sales climb in July

The Commerce Department said today retail sales rose 0.4 percent in July following drops in May and June.

The increase matched analyst expectations, according to the department. Vehicle sales rose 1.6 percent during the month while sales excluding auto dealers climbed 0.2 percent.
